There was an amusing argument in the auction about the
'ugly' missing Bigsby on this guitar, mis-ID'd as a 1454.
"The trapeze bridge is also an after market part. It
originally had the ugly bigsby tremolo but i have no idea
what happened to it."
"DO YOU HAVE THE ORIGINAL TUNERS AND BIGSBY TREMOLO. THE
BIGSBY TREMOLO IS FAR FROM BEING UGLY AND IS 1000 TIMES
BETTER THAN WHAT IS ON THERE NOW. YOU SHOULD NEVER CHANGE AN
ORIGINAL VINTAGE GUITAR UNLESS YOU PLAN TO KEEP IT YOURSELF
FOR LIFE!!! ORIGINALITY MEANS EVERYTHING ON THOSE OLD
GUITARS."

Seldom-seen Acoustic Guitars are part of our first ups today, one from
the earliest days of the Silvertone name being applied to
guitars, and the next from when the name was abandoned by Sears.
The first, a relative of the 291 'Crest' model (they share the
diamond-dotted necks), and one of the last archtops available
before Sears' guitar drought during World War II, the 710.

around 1969. The name hung around until 1972 or so, as there
was a lot of stock with that name applied in the warehouses.
This 1209 model was one of the first 'Space Dot' branded
guitars, even though it's been removed from this example.

We Certainly Love Our Old Instruments,
but archaeologists
recently unearthed an extremely vintage stringed
instrument on a dig in China. It's a se,
a multi-bridge, many-stringed plucked zither, and it's in great
shape, especially for a 3,000 or so year-old wooden instrument.
Looks like it needs a new set of strings...
I couldn't find any se videos, but big this "Sweet Child
O' Mine" cover...
...and something a little more traditional...
Alright... history lesson over, on to some Silvertonium!

The most exciting thing about the sad-sack 'Blue' above
was the empirical evidence (courtesy of that skewed bridge)
that the green finish we often see on these guitars is
indeed an environmentally-induced fade, and not a different
paint formulation. See the area at the tip of the 'V' area
that was covered by the bridge? Standard issue 'Kentucky
Blue' color! Also, thanks to the bridge-induced scraping of
the finish, we can also see that the entire guitar was
'shot' blue, then the white applied.

Elvis 80th Birthday? My, how
time flies! I've never been able to find a picture of EP holding
or playing a Silvertone, try as I might. There is a famous photo
of him from 1958, though, with a 6-string Dano bass at Nashville's
Studio B. The Nashville guys loved the 'tic tac' sound of
this bass, identical (save for the branding) to the Sears-sold
Silvertone 1373.
