January
2011
This month's feature article:
1/31
8.33333333333%; that's how over 2011 is.
Doesn't seem so bad. One-twelfth. 11 months to go! January is nearly
done, and we'll do a recap of the money this first month saw
Silvertone-wise, but the weekend was certainly a great capper to
this month... HUGE! Kick the day off with some rarities; one electric,
one acoustic.
Silvertonian Blues Monkey sent in some pics of this Canadian-sold
model (the big 'S' on the headstock logo stands for Simpson-Sears) a
coupla years back, and it had "Electric Guitar Model 525" on a sticker
on back of the headstock. The one below makes it the third one I've
seen.
525 Kawai (?) SBEG VG
$210 Clean, light wear, logo strong, one 'tightener' (that
would be the high 'E' tuner) missing
700
Harmony FHAC VG $371 Clean, some
surface/edge wear, 'deco' logo strong, light rust to tuner plates, tuner
buttons mellowed to a nice 'coffee & cream' color, stamped F-49
I'm a bit amazed that our first and only 'Kentucky Blue' for
January came in here on this last bit of the month!
653
Kay FHAC VG $338 Clean, light wear,
pickguard present, logo strong, rust to tuner plates and tailpiece
619 Kay
FHAC MOD $257
Clean, minimal wear, 'bridge seep' stain to top, small logo strong, nice
graining on back, five-dot neck, stamped 57-619, P-13 & L-5896,
seller says "The original brass frets (flat-top profile)
have been replaced with gold-alloy frets (half-round profile). The nut
also has been replaced. The neck appears to be stable at the joint.
String height at the 12th fret is about 3 mm for both low and high E
strings. The set-up is not perfect, and buyer should be aware that
further restoration work might be in order. (The original frets and the
bone nut will be included, along with extra gold-alloy fret-stock.)"
619Kay
FHAC VG $111
Clean, light wear, some finish checking, rust to tailpiece, four-dot
neck, stamped L2049 6887, seller says "This guitar has
some overall dirtiness and will benefit from cleaning."

light wear, some finish checking, playing wear to neck, NS bridge,
pickup wiring exposed (?!?), screw cracks to truss rod cover, stamped
S-60-IW, serial #3190H1429
668
Kay FHAC G $250 Clean, pickguard present,
light wear, logo strong, tuner buttons shrinking, rust to tailpiece, NS
bridge, some finish wear on bottom near tailpiece and seam looks
'repaired.' ID'd as '62/'63 vintage, this is actually a mid-late '50s
guitar.
1204
Harmony FTAC F $15 Edge/surface wear,
finish checking, rust to tuner plates, crack on top treble lower bout,
logo strong, bridge and nut missing
605
Harmony FTAC w/ C G $51
Clean, some edge/surface wear, 'deco' logo strong, some oxidation to
frets, nut chipped on bass side, holes in top (looks like a NS pickguard
or pickup attach)

Neither the tremolo nor the reverb is working. They worked fine about a
year ago, now when I want to sell it, they stop working! Oh well. I have

can be talked into it. "

resonator, 'wind chime' logo strong, new grover tuners incl., seller
says "The banjo retains it's original (untorn and
playable) calfskin head!!! Currently, it isn't playable...all it needs
is a cheap little wooden bridge to rest on the head and 8 tiny screws to
put the NEW open back Grover tuners on. Also, those strings that you see
are new...and the Kay tailpiece is a nice fitting replacement I found.
The eyelets are already there and the tuners fit perfectly. I don't have
a bridge so I can't finish putting it together. Besides, I CAN'T EVEN
PLAY THE BANJO. "
2574 Oscar Schmidt autoharp w/ OC

present, books and record incl., tuning wrench unseen/unmentioned

Harmony SBEG pickguard/electronics $125
Lead pickup missing, knobs missing, screw crack on upper bass side horn,
stamped October 1965
This dismantled 1484 was all auctioned off by the same seller.
Total for the 'kit:' $662! You'd still have to add speakers... and fix
the speaker cab. I have no evidence these were sold to the same buyer.
1484
Dano empty speaker cabinet $127 Handle in
place, covering has some issues, bottom panel shows some
warping/swelling, baffle shows some water staining, grille cloth and
back panel in relatively good shape, stamping indicates 1964 build

strong, cracked at treble f-hole bottom and under pickguard, stamped
L-7823-6889
I don't even know if this came from Sears, can't find it in any of
my catalogs, but let's give it a gander, anyway. Interesting that the
seller is from Oregon... close enough that this instrument could indeed
have migrated from Canada. So, maybe a Simpson-Sears?
1411 (?) MIJ UNK SBEG G
$102 Clean, light wear, NS bridge, whammy arm missing, no
logo, sticker reads "559-1411"
1/28

surface scratches (esp. on back), logo strong, stamped S-67 S, seller

856 Harmony Baritone Ukulele w/ C
VG $150 Clean, light wear,
some scratches on back, old school logo strong, stamped with Harmony
serial 1770H695.
Seller ID'd the guitars as 60s vintage, but judging from the logo, I'd
scoot it back at least in the 50s, maybe
earlier.
1310
Valco lap steel w/ OC VG $350 Clean, light
wear, logoplate looks good, seller says "comes with a
vintage sears home study course book for Hawaiian Guitar all so has
original pamphlet for care of the guitar. It also has the Hawaiian
guitar tuner accurate pitch a-440 in its original box still. This would
make a nice addition to anyone's collection. Also comes with 3 original

Everything I love about Silvertone
is represented today; we've got some great amps, a user mod, an iconic
ampincase, some rarities, a mystery, some non-instrument-related
Silvertone 'stuff,' and a handful of parts that reveal generally unseen
construction details. Let's start it off with this mighty Medalist, the
1434.
1434
Dano tube amp VG $500 Clean, light wear to
covering and grille, tremolo non-functional, footswitch incl., seller
says "The tubes are giving a little problem with noise
and popping. Need to be re-tensioned or cleaned. Not a serious problem.
Tremolo is not working. I think that it is the driver tube. I am
including in this auction another 1434 amp that has all the original
parts so any repair job is no big deal. The one output transformer has
been replaced on this second amp. Otherwise both amps are completely
original except the tubes."
1465
Dano solid state amp only MOD $111
Re-cabineted, light wear, control face clean, 2x 1/4" speaker jack mod,
no footswitch, seller says "Good working condition. Item
has been fully tested."
1481
Dano tube amp G $128 Square speaker cutout,
clean, light wear, some 'chew' to back panel corner, knob inserts
discolored, seller says "...needs new filter cap for
sure, picture makes it look better than it is. Works a little bit. Needs
someone who knows something about these amps to work it up."
1482
Dano tube amp VG $205
Round speaker cutout, light wear, clean, (1) NS knob, tremolo "whooshes"
past 4 on the dial
672 Kay
FHAC G $303 Clean, light wear, logo
laminate looks good, tuner buttons shrinking, binding broken on treble
upper bout, nice graining on back, recently had a pro set-up
1420 Harmony SSEG w/ OC
VG $375 Clean, light wear, chrome shiny, logo strong, seller
bought this a few years back from VintageSilvertones.
1448
Dano SSEG guitar and tube amp in case VG
$450
Clean, light wear, knob inserts discolored, logo lightly worn, glitter
void at treble side of bridge, case has a couple of small covering
scrapes but otherwise quite nice, transitional version; triangle knob
inserts to guitar knobs, line insert to amp knob, oval-buttoned strip
tuners, 3-bolt neck
This 1477 was found in the back room of a music shop that closed long
ago. I wonder if the proprietor stripped the head to remove the
Silvertone name?
666
Harmony FTAC 12-string w/ OC G $203 Clean,
edge/surface wear, light rust to tuners, action is high, strap/capo/how
to care for booklet incl., serial #554H666
758
Kay Mandolin w/ C VG $228 'Venetian' style,
clean, light wear, 'S' worn on pickguard, thick script logo strong w/
some paint transfer over the 't,' stamped N-3 and L 646
In the "Not A Guitar Or Amp But Silvertone-y Enough I Thought
You'd Like To See It" department:
Saddle up, pardner! This is the prettiest 'Model No. 4' radio I've ever
seen; nearly perfect. Went for a beauty of a price, too:
$1100!
Color Television used to be a pretty big deal, but now that your
cheapest mp4 player can show 20-jillion-color videos, it's not really a
selling point anymore. Check the backside of this 16" x 24" sign; see
the circular wear? I'd bet there was some kind of lit color wheel behind
this that rotated through the (close but not quite)
NBC peacock's
feathers. Sold for $21.
Quite a
lively discussion over at Videokarma on whether or not this was an
NBC-approved bit of advertising. The peacock on the sign is
modified slightly from its NBC cousin, and Sears did a double-dip of
copyright, shall we say, imPINGEment, by using a very 'Disney'
font and the phrase "Wonderful World."
Time was, you could get everything from a
Silvertone wind generator to a
Silvertone hearing aid to a Silvertone battery checker. Here's a
nice example of the latter; a Model 6904, still working, recently
pressed into service checking medical devices. Five bucks took it.
Here's an oddball that snuck in through the Silvertone Ebay Filter™;
looks like a
604, but it ain't. Also, the
logo looks like it ends in "tone," but it doesn't match any Silvertone
font I've ever seen.
UNK UNK FTAC $35
Clean, some surface edge wear, logo is mutilated, neck joint loose, NS
tuners
Here's some more of that 1456 from yesterday, and the rest of this
guitar is currently (1/27/11) in
active auction over on ebay,
if you need a 1456 part or two.
Wild and Woolly Wednesday... Wow!
Don't usually see this kind of action mid-week, but I'm happy we've got
it! Let's start the day off with a beautiful and rare 40s era Silvertone
'Crest' model. After that, we've got a little Harmony cowboy
action, some great Danos (amps and guitars), and a handful of "dis, dat
and the utter ting" (I think that's a Gilligan's Island quote).
291
Kay FHAC G $710 Clean, edge/surface wear,
professionally restored, playing wear to neck, some wear to bass side
back, logo worn, NS compensated bridge (orig. incl.). Also, if you need
an example of how to best auction a guitar, I urge you to check out
Jukebox Bonfire's completed auction for this piece. Soundclips, TONS
of photos, and a great write-up on the full story of this rare guitar.
612
Harmony FTAC VG $250 Clean, light wear,
stencil and logo strong, NS tuners, bottom strap button missing. This
guitar was available in the late 50s as the autograph-less version of
the Gene Autry guitar. Sears would later recycle this model number on a
Harmony-made archtop.
1415
Dano SSEG G $482 Clean, edge/surface wear,
logo broken at 'S,' NS tuners, NS cavity cover, playing wear to neck
1444
Dano SSEG Bass G $485 Could use a good
cleaning, edge/surface wear, a few scratches, logo broken at 'S,' cavity
cover on back looks a little off-kilter, frets leveled and fingerboard
dressed
1472
Dano tube amp G $228 Round speaker cutout,
edge wear, could use a good cleaning, rust to xformer, tremolo weak, no
footswitch, red border panel with 'tremlo' misspell
1483
Dano tube amp and speaker cabinet MOD
$650 Covering to amp and speaker cab painted black, control
face clean, grille looks good, NS plywood baffle in cab, 1/4"
speaker jack mod, speaker stamping indicates 1963 build
1392
Dano tube amp G $300 Could use a good
cleaning, grille stains, light wear, logo looks great, handle worn,
3-prong AC mod, seller says: "This amp is perfect for
restoration. I bought this amp used and it worked but I believe a tube
has gone out. One of the main power tubes stopped glowing."
Here's a sad puppy...
1300
Valco tube amp P $110

everywhere, (1) NS knob, control face worn
1437Teisco MIJ SBEG $168

logo worn, screw crack on upper bass peak of pickguard, pickguard seems
mis-aligned or shrunken
658

model, stamped L 7669
2574 Oscar Schmidt autoharp w/ OC
VG $68 Clean, light wear, tuning wrench and
book incl.
Thought I'd throw this one in just for fun (and because my
daughter was thrilled to see a pink guitar).
Samick Silvertone SBEG M
$40 "Revolver" model, seller says "this guitar
is new will come with the original box, cable and tremolo bar"
The rest of this guitar is currently (1/26/11) in
active auction over on ebay,
if you need a 1456 part or two.
1456
Teisco MIJ neck $50 No tuners, string
separator (with a zero fret, it's not really a nut) incl. but not glued
in place

Still recovering from the weekend?
Well, I am... Silvertone-wise. The second batch of Silvertonium
from the weekend's auctions is coming your way, right after TWO Wish
Book only 1304 models that sold yesterday, and a Silvertone World
programming note.
I've recently been ruminating on these Wish Book only
models a lot. If you've been reading my daily updates, you know I've
been searching for some definitive answers in he form of catalog
listings, lately looking for a 1960 Wish Book to clear up the model
number identity of the above guitars. I finally got a 1960 Wish Book,
but the answer I sought wasn't as clear-cut as I'd hoped. Read all about
it in what will be a continuing Silvertone World series of articles on
our favorite guitars and amps.
This first article is
"From a Dano
Six." Enjoy!
1304
Dano SSEG VG $520 Clean, some surface/edge
wear, logo strong but worn at 'S,' playing wear to neck, sidewalls
clean, pots date to early 1960 (seller didn't pin down the month, and
the pics of the control cavity were just this side of sharp
enough), neck stamping could be first week of 1960, or mid-march 1960.
If they were back ordered from Christmas (the story the seller floated),
I'd reckon the stamping to be 110, indicating Dano workers got right
back to work in the new year of 1960.
1445 Kay HBEG VG
$540 AU ($539 US) Clean, light wear, light checking,
pickguard missing, scratchy pots, NS knobs, logo strong

Clean, minimal wear, painted on 'pickguard' looks good, nice graining,
logo strong
1465
Dano solid state amp
1464
speaker cabinet $179 Clean, corner/edge
wear, rust to jack nuts, (1) NS Radio Shack speaker in cabinet, seller
says "The head powers up with the light lighting, but
when I turn it on and run it into a cabinet, it makes a loud humming
sound, so it will definitely need work. The head is now set up with a ¼”
jack on a cord to plug into a cab, and the cab has only two loose wires,
so you’ll have to put a jack on the cab cord. Also, the AC cord to the
head is frayed and not safe, so it will need to be repaired or
replaced." Re-listed in March.
1465
Dano speaker cabinet $85 Missing 3
speakers, painted black, casters present, bottom speaker
disconnected/intermittent, stamping indicates 1966 build. Text of
auction would lead me to believe the amp is also included, but
unpictured: "The 1465 has been disassembled, inspected,
rewired, and bench-tested. Current config is 40-watts (2x20-watts), and
sounds AWESOME! The stock cabinet (a few scuffs, but no damage) specs
are 32" x 12 x 26", with a black grillcloth (was painted, but can be
flipped over with the original grey sparkle-cloth intact)." The
best thing about this auction is the construction details revealed by
the missing speakers; none of the six speakers in a 1465 cab had a full
circle to make noise through; to maximize available space and still
claim six big Jensens in place, Dano had to make a few structural/design
decisions on the speaker baffle, obviously.
1465
Dano speaker cabinet $350 Edge/corner wear,
all speakers present, casters present, 1/4" jack added, "Danger" sign
added to cover small hole in grille, stampings indicate 1967 build
452
Harmony ukulele
F $32 Clean, edge/surface wear, stencil
strong, logo worn, top tuners missing. This is the early wood
fingerboard version.
1423
Harmony SSEG $182 Neck / body / bridge, no
guts or hardware, finish stripped, logo gone
1484
Dano tube amp only $100 Quote from seller
"The amp was in working condition before parts were removed"
Dano speaker cabinet logo plate
$25 Clean, no clips
Dano footswitch
$50 Clean, minimal wear
Dano footswitch $41
Clean, seller says "It was my dad's."

Just your typical GIGANTIC Silvertone weekend!
Plenty of variety, and some good money, too! Let's kick it off with a
trio of the weekend's highest dollar gatherers; our first up a fine
Kay-made 1372, next a 'Chris Isaak' 1446 and third, a prized 1483
amp. After that, I'll get to what I can, and finish up tomorrow!
A rare "aristocrat' (still waiting on one of y'all to send me a
citation on that name that isn't anecdotal), offered only in the
Fall/Winter 1958 catalog!
1372
Kay HBEG w/ OC VG $1095 Clean, minimal
wear, logo and pickguard stencil strong, slight binding separation on at
treble side waist, stamped L 297 8998
1446
Harmony HBEG w/ C G $600 Clean, some edge
wear/flaking (esp. at binding), repaired side cracks near jack and on
bass side near waist, Bigsby present, pickguard missing, logo strong,
some oxidation dots to pickup covers, looks like glue residue on cutaway
bout, (1) knob cracked, (1) NS tuner ferrule
Sold by Sears as a bass set-up, this amp has been freuqently pressed
into guitar duty. As such, it's a favorite of R.E.M.'s Peter Buck (that
last shot in the recap lineup is Buck's Rick and 1483 from the
trailer for their
forthcoming album) and also seen onstage with
Rilo Kiley.
It's also our FIRST 1483 of the year!
1483

Harmony ukulele G $80
Clean, edge/surface wear, logo strong, tuners tight
Based on the Harmony-branded
H1, I've never
seen this lap steel as a Silvertone with a metal logo; it's usually
sporting a late-era 'block logo. The last pic in the lineup below is an
example of that logo. As that metal logo is readily available as a repro
item, I believe it to be a non-stock embellishment. That said, the H1
was available as early as 1962, and that metal logo was seen in that
era. Without a catalog listing for this funky steel, we'll have to leave
it all 'unknown.'
UNK Harmony lap steel w/ OC

Silvertonium is a wonderful element; and we're gonna start today's deals gone down off with this awesome
600 series Harmony-built
guitar that is, of course, made of pure Silvertonium. The 600
series was one of the longest running in Sears history, and it's amazing
to me the unique pickguard design survived as long as it did. I wish I
could tell you whether it's a 600 or a 602, but the seller's entire
descrip on this beautiful strummer was terse and pretty much
informationless: "I believe this guitar is in very good
condition. The neck looks good to me. It comes with it own case."
Well, at least they took good photos. After the 600 and the 602, the
shape of this guitar got a little 'squarer' on the bottom, and became
the familiar guitar we see auctioned weekly here at Silvertone World.
This is one of the best examples of the early 'round' shape that I've
seen, and it went for a steal.
600 series
Harmony FTAC w/ OC VG
$174
Clean, minimal wear, 'deco' logo strong, probably a replacement bridge
Something you don't see very much on 658 models: a
headstock legend proclaiming its model number! This would be one of the
very last examples of this model; the dot neck markers tip you off to
that, but the headstock screenprint would place it as one of the very
last of this model that Sears sold.

1474
Dano tube amp MOD $405 Clean, some edge
wear, some grille rips and here's the rest of the story from the seller:
"This is the rarer version 185.10411 with 2 6CG7 tubes
but has been modified as follows: The reverb circuit has been completely
removed. The channel 2 circuit has been disabled. Both output
transformers have been upgraded. The 2nd 6CG7 tube is not being used. It
appears that all capacitors and most resistors have been replaced. The
Jensen P12Q speakers both date to 1965 ...the amp dates to 62/63 so the
speakers are probably not original to the amp. One of the speakers has
been repaired with black silicone. Both speakers have some kind of
dimples along the outer edges but both sound great. All of the knobs
have been replaced with chicken heads. Back panel has been replaced.
Tremolo works fine. Amp sounds great. The circuit employed is the same
as the 185.10410 version so the sound is still that of a Silvertone
1474."
Quite an amplifier haul, I must say... and quite a guitar haul
coming your way as well. How about a beeeeeyootiful pair of

Weirdest, wildest thing this month... this "New 802" banjo as it
announces itself from the label also has some head-turning info
elsewhere. This odd (I've seen this 'arc-top' banjo many many times, but
had no idea of its origins) banjo apparently came from the VALCO
factory! The label (dated 2/17/68) on the original box shows an old (and
apparently little-known) address for Valco Guitars, Inc. The banjo
matches the specifications of other labeled 802 banjos that I've seen.
This labeling is on the back of the headstock near the top, in a
sans-serif font, with a MADE IN U.S.A." legend just below it. I didn't
see it on today's first up example, but I've added a pic of the
headstock back of a known 802 for ya right here. Now... that type (font,
etc.) of silk screening of model numbers is usually seen as a Kay kinda
thing, so now, I'm wondering if Kay made the back-labeled 'arc-tops'
while Valco made the non-labeled 'arc-tops?'

Harmony SBEG w/ OC VG
$400
Could use a good cleaning, minimal wear, logo strong, whammy arm
present, seller says "THE ONLY ISSUE IS THE PICKGUARD IS
WARPED A LITTLE IN THE NECK PICKUP AREA AND IS PUSHING THE NECK PICKUP
INTO THE STRINGS. OUR LUTHIER IS GOING TO DO A SET UP AND ADJUSTMENT
WITH NEW STRINGS BUT SOMETHING WILL HAVE TO BE DONE ABOUT THE GUARD WITH
EITHER A SCREW PUT IN TO HOLD IT DOWN OR ??? EVERYTHING ELSE IS FINE."
853
Harmony ukulele G $76
Clean, light wear, some buckle rash, logo strong, tuners tight,
"mahogany" sticker present, seller says "It has been in
the family for many years and time for someone else to enjoy. It has
great sound and is in good shape. It has a fine crack in the back but it
doesn't effect the structural integrity of the instrument or sound and
is along the grain of the wood. It only has three strings with it so you
would have to get a new string. The keys are good and the frets look
good and the neck is straight. It has a few nicks and normal wear for
it's age. I believe a little TLC would make it a very nice instrument.
We are not sure how old it is but we are guessing it was purchased new
in the early 1960's"
Actually, that particular head design and 'thick script' logo appeared
in the 853 models of the 1950s through to the mid-1960s! Specifically as
listed and illustrated in the catalogs of 1950 through mid 1965, an
awesomely long run of one product, let alone style of instrument.
Awesome!
698 EKO FTAC G $34
Clean, unique logo strong, heavy finish checking (esp. on back, common
amongst this entire family of guitars), seller says
"Guitar does need some work. There are nicks, dings and scratches. The
finish on the top and back does have lots of cracks. All the cracks are
finish only and do not go through the wood. Tuners on the bass side are
replacements and one is missing the peg and gear. Neck itself is
straight. The angle is low but this is a bolt on neck so you would be
able to shim it to the proper angle. Frets are in nice condition. Guitar
will need new strings and a set up. One string pin is missing."
1445 Kay HBEG G
$310 Pickguard missing, some surface wear and scratching,

Wonderful Year's End! Holidays galore and
great Silvertone sales! In December 2010, we reported on over
291 auctions totaling $79,022! That just
barely edges out December '09 by 2 grand or so, but the upward trend
continues!
Here's some highlights of what changed hands: An
amazing
(38) 1448 guitars/amps or one or the other,
(15) 1457 guitars/amps or one or the other, (15) 1484 amps,
(10) 1482 amps, (9) 1481 amps, (8) 'Chris Isaak'
1446 model guitars, and only (2) 1385/1427 'Espanadas,' one
of which was our highest dollar item at
$1380. The least amount brought in December was $9

If you haven't visited
December 2010, give it a look... it was QUITE a month!
Now that we've recapped the last of the
year that was, let's jump feet-first into 2011! First let's sample a
lovely 'Chris Isaak' 1446 that topped our money making-list today, and
not far below that, crank it up with a nice 'Jimmy Reed' model, the
Silvertone-branded version of the Kay K-161: the 'Thin Twin' 1381.
I also edited the
WikiPedia
article on the K-161, to reflect its Silvertone cousin.
