May 2010
6/4
Blossoms of cash!
That's was May 2010. Not quite up to the awesomely record-setting
March 2010 of nearly 100 grand, but pretty respectable with 263 tracked items
going for $75,162! That's $6,000 better than
May of '08; seems I didn't total up May last year. Well, as long as the
graph keeps on its way UP!
Here's some highlights of what changed hands:(21) 1448 guitars/amps or one or the other,
(18) 1457 guitars/amps or one or the other, (17) 1484 amps,
(14) 1482 amps, (6) 1481 amps, (4) 'Chris Isaak'
1446 model guitars, (6) 1427
'Black Beauty'
guitars, and (7) 1423 'Jupiter' guitars. The highest dollar item a rare
aluminum-bound 1384 'Black Beauty' that went for $2500.
The least amount brought in April was $4 for a pitted 1477
tailpiece.
If you haven't visited April
2010, give it a look... it was QUITE a month!
6/1
I've been waiting a couple of weeks
to bring today's first up. It's been through the auction mill a round or
two, but it finally sold this weekend for $83. It's part of the strange
menagerie of modified instruments I like to call "Frankentones." It's a
guitar neck attached to a stencil-decorated Silvertone model 1838 Oscar
Schmidt-built autoharp. I can't see as where the pickup would pick up
any direct vibrations from the autoharp strings; sympathetic vibrations
might be transmitted to the pickup through incidental vibration of the
main 6 guitar strings, but even that output would be negligible if you
were strumming the guitar. Looks to me like the lower half of a
humbucker was pressed into double duty as the holder for the bridge
saddle; pretty resourceful, really... but the whole concept of this
instrument is all so wrong that it's somehow... alright.
Now, on to the rest of May! I'll get the number totals wrapped up
for the month, and bring you a report tomorrow or Thursday.

OK, here's how I do it, when it can
be done... it's also what I do when it's a hopeless cause, hoping I'll
find out something new along the way. When faced with an unidentified
archtop guitar, the first thing I look for is any mention in the
seller's notes about an internal or otherwise stamping or ID mark. We
got lucky with this one, as it has a Kay-type marking of '661 6744'
inside the f-hole. That tells us immediately that this is a Kay-made
guitar. Not lucky enough to get a Harmony stamping though; if the number
had had an 'H' embedded in it, we'd know it was a Harmony-made guitar,
and the three or four digits after the 'H' would ID the Sears/Silvertone
model number, and all we'd have to do would be to look it up. Kay
numbers are rarely as helpful, so off we go to do a visual ID. So, we
look for any unusual features that will help narrow down the model or
era of the guitar. This one has three nice features that will
(hopefully) lead us to its identification. The headstock has the 'wind
chime' logo, the binding is a very unusual alternating black/white
design, and the fretboard has great big block fret markers. So, here we
go; first, the 'wind chime' logo takes me to the early 1950s section of
my catalogs, and then I start looking and reading. First, I look for a
guitar with block inlays. When I find one, I read the description, and
with any luck I'll have an ID. OK, here we go... block inlays...
check.... anything in the descrip about fancy binding? No... no... no...
wait! Here's one: "Black and white pinline inlay on top." Looks like we
might have a candidate, the Silvertone model #694 guitar, available from
1950 through 1955 (they added a blonde in 1952; the #692), originally
priced at $27.95. Lemme see, these pickguards all have a big 'S' on 'em,
and the headstock is more of a 'pointy' style... what's a 'pinline,'
anyway? Better keep looking... *sigh*...
OK, hmmmm... what's this one? It's got a narrow
'bump' headstock and big fret markers... I can see the 'wind chime' logo
in the illustration... the description reads "black and white block
inlay on top edge." Hey, that sounds better than 'pinline'... and,
there's no 'S' on the pickguard! Ladies and gentlemen, we have a winnah!
It's the model Silvertone Model #661, available from
Spring/Summer 1955 through early 1957 (along with a blond sister, the
663), originally priced at $29.95. It was replaced in the Spring/Summer
1957 catalog by the 668, a very similar guitar that had a script-type
logo on a black flared headstock (see an example in the listing for
5/25, below). Mystery solved, and we got lucky on this one, with some
unique features and clear catalog listings. Oddly enough (and this does
not happen much with Kay-built models, trust me), the answer was
right there in the internal stamping all along!

Big Weekend on the way here in the
US, as we kick off the summer with cookouts, swimming, fireworks and
fun, and honor the defenders of our country with Memorial Day.
Here in Silvertone World, yesterday's 1472/1482 amp fireworks continue!
The end of May also marks the summer hiatus of daily auction reports
here at Silvertone World. I'll still be keeping an eye on the auctions,
of course, but I'll only report on exceptional or unusual items that go
under the gavel, and maybe track the daily sales of a few popular items
on a couple of graphs. That said, I'll also be working on a bunch of new
pages for the site, so it's a perfect time to
sign up to follow
Silvertone World on twitter. I'll 'tweet' a message your way every
time I do report into the recap page with a new item (it won't be
daily), or to let you know of a newly published page here at Silvertone
World. We'll start Silvertone Summer on Tuesday, after a recap of
the May money totals.

Ugliest. Day. Ever. How do these
things happen? It's some kind of cosmic Silvertonium particle spin that
makes things happen in clusters here in Silvertone World. Some days
we'll have a half-dozen 1448s, some days it's two or three of the same
rare or unusual guitar or amp, some days its the exact same price for a
multitude of items...today it's... just... hard to look. I can
hardly believe all the ugliness that chose to go under the gavel today.
Get ready, y'all... it ain't purty.

A great big weekend, with some
pretty big Silvertone deals, a couple of unique surprises, and so much of an assortment
that I thought I'd pass along a couple of interesting finds that came in
over the wire this weekend that I don't usually report on. There is, of
course, a big market in vintage Harmony guitars and vintage Silvertone
radios, but I'm doin' good just to keep up with the $60-80 grand (on
average) worth of monthly Silvertone auctions! Anyhoo, here's a couple of
sweet pieces that went or some astounding money.
We've seen a bunch of the
Silvertone version of this guitar go for some good money lately, but
I thought you might dig seeing this 'real' Espanada, the famous Harmony
H63, complete with round-the-diner-counter "Harmo-Metal" binding. Went
for a princely $4100 over the weekend!
Ladies and Gentlemen, I present to you the
Silvertone
6109, the "Rocket," straight from the late 30s 'deco' era to you!
Push buttons on top (with
KDKA,
WGR, and
WHDL programmed in on
this example), a giant
dial with the AM frequencies and 'SILVERTONE' imprinted on the edge,
cool machine age design (by
Clarence Karstadt), and a hefty price tag of $1733!
And now, on with the show... I put the surprises right up front!
One-off? Mistake? Custom job? Did Harmony just run out of
bound-holed bodies that day and still had to make quota? This is the
first sunburst 1214 I've seen with a non-bound soundhole. The front and
back edges are nicely bound, just like the rest of the 600 series, but
the soundhole on this 1214 has a simple double ring decal. Every other
sunburst 1214 I've seen has been identical to the rest of the 600
series; the very last examples had a block lettered logo, and then a'Space Dot'
logo at the very end of the run, but they all had bound soundholes.
There was a Space-Dotted blonde 1214 that had a double ring decal, but
that decal and guitar was different than the example we see below.
This next guitar is unlike any other 1418 I've ever seen, this one
looks more like it's Teisco-branded counterpart, the EP-2L, but this one
is even different from that guitar. The only way we even know this to be
a 1418 is the rather unusual sticker on the neckplate.
I love surprises!

1391 Dano tube amp MOD
$146 Clean, light wear, logoplate looks good, NS knobs and a
whole lot more:
Here's the list of mods made to this amplifier: 1) The circuit has been refurbished and modified to a Fender Champ
5F1 circuit (except for the rectifier).
- original circuit used a somewhat funky configuration of 6X5GT, 6V6,
and 6AU6 tubes. It was somewhat bland sounding, and didn’t produce much
volume. The 5F1 circuit uses a dual triode, providing an additional gain
stage. This reults in much more volume and tone, and fantastic breakup
at higher volume levels. It uses a 12AX7, but I have sub’d a 12AY7 (more
clean headroom), and no doubt you can use a 12AT7 or 5751. To be clear -
the 6X5GT rectifier and 6V6 power tubes were preserved, but a 12AX7
socket was installed. Critical resistors were changed and all capacitors
were replaced with new quality parts.
2) Installed a phono jack for the speaker so it can be used with a 1x12
cab (you should hear it driving a quality 1x12 cab).
3) Installed a new output transformer - the orginal was DOA when I
acquired it. The new OT provides 4, 8, and 16 ohm taps. There is a
switch installed change between 4 ohms and 8 ohms. The internal speaker
is 4 ohms. This allows you to connect to an 8 ohm cab simply by
switching tap setting and changing the speaker cable. It’s also a simple
matter to enable the 16 ohm tap if desired.
4) an IEC Power cord adapter is installed with properly grounded 3 wire
cord and Fuse.

I'm beginning to think that early (mid-late 40s) 708 models were
made by Kay. The triple double dot neck markers is the sole identifying
feature I'm going on. Quite unusual, and the earliest 708s show this
feature along with the peaked headstock and 'wind chime' logo. Later
versions of the 708 show the triple markers, but the headstock is more
rounded, the logo is the 'deco' style, and the 'deco' logo'd guitars are
stamped with a Harmony number.

A real 'spice of life' report today! What an amazing variety of Silvertone items coming in from this
mid-May weekend! Big money for a nice 1485, three of a kind on some
1457s, with a nice pair of 1448s. Speaking of pairs, we've got the rare
12-chord 2573 Autoharp, not once, but twice... and with an action
shot! A rare 1473 bass/accordion amp, a not-signed-by-Gene Autry
cowboy-themed 612, a Rick-ish 'Rebel' 1453, and more, more, more
Silvertone hauled up onto the deck for all to see.
Check 'em out!

Showers of moolah!
That's was April 2010. Not quite up to the awesomely record-setting
March of nearly 100 grand, but pretty respectable with 264 tracked items
going for $83,562! That's a
whopping $30,000 better than April last year. Seems that Silvertone is a
real growth industry!
Here's some highlights of what changed hands:(26) 1448 guitars/amps or one or the other,
(6) 1457 guitars/amps or one or the other, (13) 1484 amps,
(16) 1482 amps, (7) 1481 amps, (8) 'Wish Book'

'Black Beauty'
guitars, (9) 1423 'Jupiter' guitars, (5) 612
f-hole acoustics, (5) 623 f-hole acoustics, and (7)
of the 604 family guitars. The highest dollar item a rare
aluminum-bound 1384 'Black Beauty' that went for $2247.
The least amount brought in April was
99¢ for a rare 'How to Care For you Silvertone STEEL GUITAR'
pamphlet.
If you haven't visited April
2010, give it a look... it was QUITE a month!
Here's a quick reminder to follow Silvertone World on Twitter.
Just click on
this link, it'll take you to the silvertoneworld Twitter page, and you
can follow the activity here at Silvertone World. I promise not to bore you
with what I'm having for lunch, or what I see out the window, or the
humorous dust bunny I found last night... I'll only announce the
publishing of the auction recap page (weekdaily) and the addition of new
pages or info here at Silvertone World.
And now... onward to May! Starting the month of with a nice flurry of
cash and prizes... a well-kept 1348 and a shamed 1352, a nice 'Chris
Isaak,' and espensive Espanada, a double dose of turquoise Kays, and
check that 1214... it may be the most recent (1973 build) Sears-sold
guitar I've ever reported.
