November
2009
11/30
When someone says "You don't see one of those every day,"
well, you kinda take it with a grain of salt. I do, anyway... but
believe me when I tell ya, you REALLY don't see many of these great
triple pickup Dano-built models come down the pike. Collectors tend to
keep 'em, for one thing, another factor is the premium price this top of
the Sears line at the time commanded, as well as the brief period of
time they were available (1958 and 1959). All these factors limit the
number of these we see up for sale. That said, I'm excited to kick off
the weekends auction report and the official 2009 Christmas/Hanukkah/Kwanzaa
holiday season with the awesome (and awesomely rare)1305!
A real slew of guitars as we finish up November, I'll get monthly
totals up ASAP, and we'll jump right on into December tomorrow!

I think I'm gonna start calling it "Green Friday,"
I mean, enough cash flies around that it certainly fits, AND you get to
throw in a Christmas color, too! Who started the 'Black Friday' thing,
anyway? The retail workers that have to endure the shopping onslaught,
I'll wager. Nevertheless, let's get going with some Green Friday
Silvertone auction deals. Check out Thanksgiving Day too, if you
haven't... some rarities and some big money deals went down, quite a
surprise (to me) for a holiday.

Tubes don't usually heat me up too much...
kinda like the anonymous parts that are ID'd as Silvertone
without any real way to back up the claim, so I generally just let 'em
pass on by. Yes, they're certainly Silvertone, but you'll frequently see
a handful of other radio/phono parts thrown together in a grab bag and
they just don't concern us much. I mean, we've got PLENTY on our plate
with guitars and amp and the occasional uke, banjo, mandolin or other
branded musical Silvertone instrument or component, right? Well, today
was an exception when a saw a Silvertone tube going for over $400! One
tube! Why is it so special? You got me! Maybe some of our gear-gut
oriented readers will provide the answer.
Don't know what tomorrow will bring auction/update-wise, but I'll at
least check in. For all our friends here in the US, have a great
Thanksgiving!
Silvertone Vacuum Tube

Yee-ha! Another high-dollar item in
a category I don't usually tell you about is this super-cool cowboy
Silvertone radio! Even with the tuning number rub, it brought a sweet
$900!
OK, on to the git-fiddles, amps and banjers,
y'all... And we'll start the day with the best example
I've seen of the long-necked 805.

Just tryin' to keep up, y'all... Oh,
I was watching "Earth vs.
The Spider"
the other night, and, like most horror movies from the late 50s,
this one had a 'rock and roll scene' in it. As I was watching the band
set up, I thought I saw a familiar shape up on the high school stage.
The band started rockin' ( really
rockin'... seems the producers hired actual musicians for this
segment, and their totally boss playin' was enough to wake the giant
spider from the dead!), and there it was again... could it be? Then
a closeup of the pompadour'd picker and there it was! A Kay-made
Silvertone 1356 model, the one-pickup job with the knobs near the
edge and the groovy fret markers! Outta sight, man! So, all in all...
WOW, what a weekend! Check it out! We've got an excellent 1423 that was
recently sold from under the bed, a few seldom scene acoustics down in
the bunch, and a real variety of our favorite Silvertone amps and
guitars.

Made an exciting discovery last
night rooting through my VHS tape collection. It's an old performance by
Chris Isaak from 1999 on the "Tonight Show." It's Chris with his band
plus a horn section doing a rousing rendition of "Rudolph." I can't post
it on YouTube or anything like that because NBC has a pretty quick and
effective "cease and desist" team, but I believe these screen captures
are certainly "fair use." I've been looking for this clip forever
because it shows Chris with his namesake guitar, the
1446. I've added larger screen captures to the
Chris
Isaak Artist page.

Dunno what to make of this auction. A rather stilted description that
doesn't mention anything other than the amp works, and a single picture
pulled from the 1471 page here at Silvertone World. OK, the seller was
in Italy, so maybe the translation software stilted the description.

A shower of deals from the weekend, and a
big meteor shower tonight! It's the annual appearance of the Leonid
meteor shower, and tonight we pass through the track of debris comet
Temple-Tuttle left behind back in 1466! Pick a dark spot, head out
around midnight (EST) and look northeast. This has the potential to be
one of the biggest meteor showers we'll see in our lifetime (NASA and
Caltech are predicting 500 meteors/hour at the peak); or it could just
be a garden-variety event, only observations tonight will tell.
Meanwhile, let's check out some down-to-earth deals from the weekends

1448 Fever on this Friday the 13th! Wow,
FOUR 1448 auctions and a rare 1449... doesn't sound like much bad
luck to me!

a three bolt neck.
1448Dano SSEG guitar only

NS knobs, NS pickup (non-working original incl.), sidewalls very clean.
This is an early transitional setup; triangle knob inserts, strip
tuners, two bolt neck and narrow attach pier, offset strap button.
Also, note how the bass 'horn' is just a bit 'pointier' than the three
examples above.
1449 Dano SSEG guitar only VG $370
Clean, minimal wear, cord retainer still in place, logo
strong
1484 Dano tube amp only
VG $242
Prettiest faceplate I've seen in a while, a little dusty, appears
corrosion free inside and out, rev/trem works, no footswitch, been
sitting idle the past year after purchase at auction
Lastly today, a rare
look inside an early Harmony-built hollow body electric. You can see
where the top was beefed up to support the P style pickup, and the extra
material added to help support the potentiometers and the f holes.
1348Harmony HBEG $129
No hardware or pickups, V/T pot network is present, no nut, pickguard

Let's spend some money!!! That's the
first thing I thought when I look at the first half-dozen or so items
that completed their auctions since yesterday evening. For those first
six items, way over 2 grand changed hands! Let's delve right in!
1485Dano Tube Amp and speaker cabinet VG $1000
Very clean, light edge wear and some scuffing to speaker cabinet, grille
looks great, stock speakers, back panel in place, NS tubes,
tremolo works, footswitch incl., stock amp dolly incl.
1321/1300Dano SSEG G
$600 Edge wear/scratches all over, playing wear to lower bass
bout, buckle rash to back, pickup shows some oxidation, playing wear to
neck, logo worn. I'm leaning toward this being the earlier 1321 model,
because short of dating the pots inside, all I can look at is the
sidewall material that makes up the pickguard as a dating guide.
1472Dano tube amp $87 Wear
and tear, doesn't work, handle taped, (1) NS knob, fuse holder missing,
back panel missing, oxidation to amp chassis and xformers, round speaker
cutout, red border control panel with 'tremlo' misspell
1484 Dano tube amp only $242
Untested, edge wear, (1) knob missing, some oxidation to control panel,
1/4" jack mod
1465 Dano solid state amp and speaker
cabinet VG $330 Clean, light wear, front
panel looks good, rev/trem work, footswitch incl., casters incl., all
six stock Jensens present, logoplate and grille look good
710 Harmony FHAC w/ OC VG
$283 Very clean, minimal wear, light oxidation to tailpiece,
neck tight, stamped S-56-T, serial # 2287H35. This is the only guitar
that matches the catalog descriptions from the 1956 era. I can only
assume that Harmony was short a few instruments for a Sears stock order
and grabbed some guitars that were designated as H35 for another reseller,
or the final product number hadn't been determined by the guitar's
initial production time. I could be wrong, but this guitar seems to fit.
656 FHAC VG $219
Clean, a few scratches here and there, 'wind chime' logo looks great
1457
Dano SSEG with tube amp in case VG $795
Clean, logo nearly worn away (intentional?), footswitch incl.
1412 Tesico SBEG VG $200
Clean, very light edge wear to top of headstock, whammy present, rare
block logo (most 1412s were 'Space Dot' models), chrome shiny
11/10-11
Boy, strep will throw you for a loop...
I'm just now just no getting back into the swing, sorry for the
delays on the auctions, but here we go: first up, we've got a couple of
the most famous and sought-after guitars in the Silvertone line; a nice
'Chris Isaak' 1446 and a Kay-made 'Thin Twin' a to start the
proceedings. Also in the mix: a seldom-seen 1434 'Medalist' amp, and a
couple of super-rare lap steels with a mandolin and some Dano electrics
thrown in for good measure.
1446 Harmony HBEG w/ OC $1795
Very clean, light edge wear to headstock, a few light scratches on back,
metal logo intact, Bigsby intact, case looks great, original manual
incl.
1369Kay SSEG
G $689 Clean, some finish flaking at
edges/binding, some finish checking, overall light scratches, a coupla
screw cracks at pickguard corners, script logo only headstock, some
fretboard 'grunge,' light oxidation to most metal parts
658 Kay FHAC G $218
Clean, some edge wear, NS tuners, some buckle wear, looks like a button
hiding a less-than-optimal screw-based heel 'repair,' block markers indicate pre-'66 model
1449 Dano SSEG with tube amp in case VG $500
Clean guitar, very light edge wear, some paint scuffs
down midline of back, amp looks good with some light oxidation to metal
parts, tremolo not working
1304
Dano SSEG w/ OC G
$550 Plenty of playing wear, dirty
sidewalls, (1) tuner plate screw missing, mis-ID'd as a model
1480, of which I don't believe there are any
1443 Dano SBEG Bass
G $405 NS pickups, cutting around pickup
holes, buckle rash, finish flaking/checking on headstock, logo intact
1434 Dano tube amp G
$357 Light edge wear, handle worn but functional, control
panel looks good, tubes light up; no sound other than slight hum
Here are those amazing lap steels
from the early 1940s, the first days of the Silvertone musical
instrument brand; one made by Kay (out of only a handful of Kay-made lap
steels), and the other the usual Valco built affair.
1313 Kay Lap Steel VG
$255 Clean, minimal wear, tuner buttons deteriorated, custom
cord and screw on plug incl. Relisted in December

1322 Harmony HBEG
VG $230 Clean, minimal wear, pots scratchy, one side NS
tuners, some binding shrinkage, pickguard missing, NS knobs, logo
strong, stamped S-52. Re-listed from earlier in the month.
1207 Harmony FTAC w/ OC
VG $26 Clean, slotted head with 'Space Dot' logo, stamped
S-72
1481Dano tube amp VG $349 Round speaker cutout, light edge
wear, small grille stain top left corner, fuse holder missing, tone knob
missing, volume knob insert discolored, tape/adhesive residue at
control panel near logo
Nothing like a repeat customer... this F-hole
acoustic sold as a "Hay Ride" guitar. At least we know it's a Kay built
model from its P-16 stamping. Neck has a bow, some light edge wear, sold
for $56. Relisted from last month.
11/9
Kind of a sleepy weekend until Sunday night...
then... ka-BOOM! Of course, that's the way sellers oughtta do it,
really. Have your auction end on a Sunday night, mid-evening east coast
time. Maximizes your chance of 'bidding wars' and statistically, I'm
sure that more folks are free to hover their fingers over the mouse for
'just one more' bid.
1423
Harmony SSEG w/ OC VG $675 Clean,
minimal wear, some light edge wear at headstock, metal logo intact,
plenty of glitter, case looks good

minimal wear, recently re-capped, rev/trem work, NS footswitch incl.
658 Kay FHAC G $160
Wear all over; fingerboard, edges, neck, headstock, rust to tuner posts,
block markers indicate pre-'66 model
Well, it looked like your everyday 1430 until I took
a peek around back...
1430
Dano tube amp MOD $100 Completely different
amp installed into cabinet, looks handmade, amp hums, but otherwise
untested. Cabinet shows some edge/corner wear, logoplate tarnished, some
grille staining, handle looks good.
Tubes are (2) 50 L6, and (1) 12AU7
1304
Dano SSEG MOD
$103 Poor thing... Refinished in
Blatantly Bogus Bargain Bin Bluish™, NS humbuckers, NS Gibson Deluxe tuners, sidewalls
removed/painted/something, painted NS bridge saddle, logo obviously
gone, pickguard missing, NS knob, NS access panel, two-bolt neck. How
did I figure out it used to be a one-pickup 1304? The unfilled pickup
adjustment screw holes on the back are located at the 'waist' of the
guitar; only the 1304 mid-placed pickup is located there... thanks,
crappy refinisher!
615Harmony FTAC
F $25
Top and back separating from sides, coupla braces 'rolling around'
inside the body, finish flaking, edge wear, strap button missing, logo
looks good
1316 Harmony Lap Steel G
$77 Tailpiece cover in place, edge wear, tape residue on
sides, functional
852 ukulele VG $90
Skier design, stencil is clean and strong, light edge wear, beautiful
graining to sides, logo slightly blurred, neck tight
856 Harmony Baritone Ukulele
F $23 Finish looks a little worn, scratches
front and back, repaired side crack. Seller amusingly states that these
are "difficult to find," but this is the second 856 we've seen this
month, and we saw 6 in October!
1448Dano SSEG guitar with ampcase
VG $450 Clean, a couple of edge wear spots, plenty of
glitter, case looks good
1448Dano SSEG guitar with ampcase
MOD $400 NS Grover tuners, repro pickguard (original incl.),
NS saddle, NS knobs, side output jack mod, NS bottom bolt holding bridge
plate on goes all the way through body; bolt head showing on back
(picture's brightness enhanced to bring out that detail), two strange
holes all the way through the neck just above the nut (old 'dive bomb'
whammy string-lock install or a very poor choice to hang it from the
wall?), early amp; triangle insert knob, NOS tubes, comes with extra
hard shell case (just a case, not a Dano ampcase)
1448Dano SSEG guitar only
F $105 Unusual NS "tune-a-matic" type bridge mode with
accompanying NS tailpiece, pickguard broken at peak of treble horn, (1)
knob missing
1457
Dano SSEG with tube amp in case G $414
Clean, light wear, some dings to headstock, rhythm volume knob missing,
guitar sidewall has big ding near V/T controls, latch on case
relocated. Seller owned guitar for 30 years
1482 Dano tube amp VG $349
Square speaker cutout, clean, bright control panel with light oxidation,
light rust to xformers, back panel in place, tremolo works, no
footswitch
Can't make it through a weekend without an anonymous
f-hole acoustic. Without any details about the inside number stampings,
it could be any of half a dozen guitars. Judging solely from the flare
of the headstock, I'm gonna peg it as a Kay. A little edge wear, a few
scrapes, coupla bent tuners, missing pickguard, logo strong, went for
$99.
This next one is a clean Kay, minimal wear and stamped N1 and 839 (839
is a valid model number; I need to investigate a little further), sold
for $281

insulation inside, looks like some kind of speaker extension also added
1448Dano SSEG guitar with ampcase

some knob insert adhesive discoloration, NS tuners, NS speakers, NS
tubes. This is an early transitional setup; triangle knob inserts, two
bolt neck and narrow attach pier, offset strap button
1448Dano tube amp in case only $180
Clean inside, outside shows some wear, works
1474Dano tube amp $280
Some edge wear, oxidation to aluminum panel faces front and back, piping
pulled away on sides, 'Property Ted Ennis' written on back, amp
function unkown; the seller talks like the spears are gone and the amp
is untested
1391 Dano tube amp VG
$160 Clean, minimal wear, back panel in place
604
Harmony FTAC
VG $61 Clean, light wear, tuner plates shiny. This is weird;
the seller says it's stamped S-56 with a serial# of 5871164, but
604 models (or there lookalikes, the 608) weren't available back in
1956, so I'm thinking the stamping is really a 66, and the correct
serial number is XXXXH604. Those numbers can be hard to read,
especially when you're looking through the soundhole with a flashlight.

What a weird paint job this line of
Italian-made 698 models received. The airbrushed soundhole surround and
the odd below the bridge dot are all part of the original finish. From
weird to wonderful; check out that beautiful Kay-built 670 model
with the double-triangle fret markers and a rare Harmony-made 1322, both
from the early 50s.

The October
totals were a point of light in these monetarily troubled
times. I tracked 264 Silvertone items in October,
and they sold for a total of
$71,359. That's $2,000 more than the
October '08 numbers, and almost the exact same amount of items! Maybe
AIG and Bear Sterns should get into the Silvertone business... hmmm..
scratch that...
Here's some highlights of what changed hands: A whopping (32) 1448 guitars/amps or one or the other,
(15) 1457s, (18) 1484 amps, (3) 1485 amps, (11)
1482 amps, (4) 1472 amps, (4) 1481 amps, (11)
'Chris Isaak' 1446 model guitars, (6) 856 baritone ukuleles,
(7) 1304 mid-pickup'd models (4 in one swoop!), (5) 604
acoustics, The highest dollar item was an nice 1385/1427 'Black
Beauty' guitar that went for $1250, and right on its heels a super
rare Harmony-built 'Newport' Silvertone (I've never seen a model
number) that went for
$1125. The least amount brought in October was $3 for a
1487 MIJ amp-in-guitar pickguard w/electronics (no pickup).
68 years?!? Yep... our first up
today was available in the Sears catalog waaaaay back in 1941!

I'll have the monthly October totals up
ASAP, I'm kind of interested to see what kind of month we had
dollar-wise. Until then, on with November! Starting the month off with
