"Not even on Silvertone World!"
Well, there ya go! Both a compliment and a rebuke. I'm happy that the
seller thought that since it wasn't on Silvertone World that the guitar
they had up for sale was pretty rare. Right after the 'compliment' wore
off, I realized there are a BUNCH of electric and acoustic guitars that
I need to post here at Silvertoneworld. So, I'm gonna get to work. If it
ain't here, I'm aimin' to get a page up for it here at Silvertone World.
Of course, they were also
right. The guitar is pretty rare. Based on the Kay "Value
Leader," available in the late '50s, it never appeared in any major
seasonal catalog.

I don't like classifying a guitar as "UNK/UNK"
(unknown model number, unknown manufacturer), but sometimes that's all I
got! Most of the time I can cipher out the manufacturer even if the
model number isn't apparent; Kays and Harmonys have certain visual cues
that lead you one way or the other, and the numbers that are (usually)
stamped inside are certain indicators of maker if not model (I'm lookin'
at you , Kay!), and this is usually only a problem on f-hole
acoustics. Electric guitars have very distinctive features, flat-top
guitars are easy to figure out, electric hollowbodies are generally an
easy read... it's just these darn f-holes that give me the biggest grief
in identification. Unless it's a
Kentucky Blue or that cool black
658,
f-hole guitars look so similar, it's very hard to differentiate models
without additional information. Sometimes an unusual fret marker design
will give you a clue, and in the late 60s, Harmony and Kay finally got
nice and started stamping the model numbers on back of the headstock.
Anyway, all that to say this; as far as positively ID'ing Silvertone
f-hole acoustic guitars, sometimes you can, sometimes you can't.

Yesterday was a
bigger-than-I-expected Monday; weekends are always big, but I expected a
little slack over the Valentine/President's Day holiday. No rest
for the weary...
Gonna get our Tuesday going with the last series in the 'U' shaped Dano-built
Silvertones, here's a nice 1417. This example is an earlier model, as
evidenced by the 'square' neck joint and the circular access panel.
Later models (a model number change occurred in 1961, to the 1415)
sported a 'swoopy' neck/body area and a five-sided aluminum panel. The
1417 first appeared in 1959, and all so-called 'dolphin-nose'
6-strings were gone from the Sears catalog with the introduction of the
ampincase models of 1962. The black-finished model was the 1419 and (at
the model # change in 1961) the 1416.

OK, OK... I know I said the other
day that I don't keep
too close an eye on the Silvertone radio/phone auctions on ebay. But
when I saw the word 'wireless' attached to this recently ended
phonograph auction, I was intrigued enough to click on the auction a
week or so ago. The 78 RPM changer has a beautiful, unusual,
rounded-corner cabinet, and the 'wireless' part was an AM transmitter
built into it, so you could broadcast your favorite tunes to the radio
in the next room or all over the farm/apartment building/office/prison.

Sometimes a guitar comes along, and
you wonder why you don't see a jillion on the collectors market. The
Harmony-made model 628 is just such a guitar. Looking like it could have
rolled of the factory line of any boutique-guitar maker of today, it
fits right in with the high-end contemporary looks of any 'modern'
flat-top cutaway. This is a beautiful example of a guitar that just
didn't 'fit' with the times. If you had a flat-top acoustic in the
mid-late '50s, you were either tryin' to look like Hank or Elvis, and
this slightly-beatnikish cutaway jazz thang just didn't cut it. Sears
must have sold a few, anyway, as it was available from the Sears catalog
from 1954 until 1958. Based on the Harmony H1200.

Clean, 'Space Dot' missing. We saw one of these last month with the tip

missing

going for me.

2/4 ♫♪It
was forty one years ago today
That a Silvertone bass would play
It look a little bit like Paul's
But the price ya know was really small...♪♫
OK, OK... Sir McCartney has nothing to worry about, I know... I just got fired up over
this amazing it's-as-clean-as-the-day-it-was-brought-home-from-Sears
example of the 1495 bass that sold yesterday.
1495 Teisco MIJ Bass E

WELCOME to February!
The January
totals were
a little slack this time around! I tracked 248 items
in December, and they sold for a total of
$65,004! That's
almost eight grand less than the December '08 numbers! Here's some highlights of
what changed hands: (21) 1448 guitars/amps or one or the other, (13) 1457s, (8) 1484 amps, (4) 1482 amps, (8) 1481 amps, (6)
615 guitars, and (4) 1446 'Chris Isaak' model guitars in the bunch.
The highest dollar item was a family-provenanced 1446 that went for
$1400, and the least amount brought was a $1 tie
for a poor condition EKO acoustic and a cut 1457 pickguard.
If you haven't visited all of
January 2009, check out all the
great stuff that sold last month; it's one of the most 'fun' months
we've had lately, as far as some unusual and really great items selling
is concerned.
Alright, February.... here we go!
This poor 1432 looks like it was the amp for the ghost
guitar player in 'The Shining' Overlook Hotel house band, if there was
one. If not, this could still be his amp. Even so, some brave buyer
forked over a little over a Benjamin because he believes he can make it
right. That 's the spirit! Pretty monogram, anyway...
1432
Dano tube amp P $125 BIN Sound is distorted
and intermittent, grille in tatters, covering gone, handle barely there,
logo gone, knobs have flown the coop, rusty speaker, pitted control
panel, NS contact paper covered back panel, worst I've seen
1341 Dano Tube amp VG
$308 A fine example of this super-rare amp; minimal wear,
grille and silk-screen look good, covering and handle captures all very
clean, NS AC cord
Here's the first I've seen of this rare bird,
available in the early 50s:
