The 628 sported a unique look
among Sears' guitar offerings, and really set this guitar apart. Maybe a little
too apart, as the 628 seems to have not tripped a lot of player's
triggers. Maybe it was bad timing; country pickers wanted to look like Hank, and
nascent rockers wanted to look like Elvis.

The Silvertone 628 is a stunningly modern acoustic
guitar from our friends at Harmony. The rounded cutaway, the unique pickguard,
the round-bottom 'Jumbo'-ish shape... it wouldn't look out of place in
among 21st century flattops, yet it was offered along with the relatively staid
flattop designs from the mid-50s! Despite a three-year window of catalog availability,
the 628 didn't seem to sell very well, as we see very few of these on the collector's
market.
